The Seventh-day Adventist Church was established as an outgrowth of the Millerite movement of the 1840’s that preached the soon return of Jesus Christ. As the movement continued to grow and the need to organize as a denomination became clearer, members began to meet to discuss organization. In October of 1860, a meeting of delegates settled on the name “Seventh-day Adventist.” The name was chosen to emphasize two of the beliefs that united the believers. Belief number one was in the sanctity of the Sabbath. Belief number two was in the second coming of Christ. In another meeting in May of 1863, delegates again met to form the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. The denomination was officially organized on May 21, 1863. Today, what began as a movement primarily based in the northeastern United States, is now a world-wide Christian denomination with over 21 million members. The church is organized under the general conference which is comprised of 13 divisions. The 13 divisions are comprised of 137 unions which are further subdivided into conferences. Conferences are comprised of individual churches.

The Central Hills church was formed in Clarksburg when the congregations of the former Clarksburg and Shinnston churches merged. In February of 1973, Central Hills moved to the former Methodist church at 614 W. Main Street on the corner of Main St. and Chestnut St. in Clarksburg and would call that location home for nearly 40 years. When the decision was made to sell that building and move out, Central Hills rented several facilities while searching for a permanent home. Most notably, we held services at the Bridgeport Presbyterian Church for close to ten years. In January of 2023, we purchased land at our current location at 208 Adena Lane. In March of 2023, we began holding services at the former doctor’s office located on the property and began construction on our new sanctuary shortly thereafter.
